Have you ever “put your foot in your mouth?” No, not literally (although that would be impressive!). But maybe you’ve said something that, later, you WISH YOU HADN’T SAID! You would give anything to take back that dumb/ignorant/mean/hurtful comment. Ahh, it’s a horrible feeling…and you only have yourself to blame.
You know, it happens…when you spend time with other people, you bring your whole self into friendships. Your friends and family accept you for who you are…whether it’s your goofy grin when you get nervous, your obsessive need to be early to everything, or even your notoriously stinky feet. (Every group of friends has a stinky foot friend or a friend that always snores at sleepovers that they love no matter what!) We all make mistakes.
And you know what? Apparently King David said dumb things sometimes, so in the Bible he prays this:
“Set a guard, LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” -Psalm 141:3
You’re not alone! I’m not alone! Sometimes we say/text/video things that we regret–mean, awful, dumb things that we know better than to say. But God gives grace and forgives us. (& we should do our best not to repeat our mistakes!!) We need to ask God for forgiveness and also ask those people we’ve hurt for forgiveness. (1st John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.) Yes, even Justin Bieber says Sorry… sometimes.
Life is easier and friendships are stronger when we THINK before we SPEAK. Mistakes happen, and it’s important to forgive and be forgiven. That is all.
